Dr. Thomas Levy is one of the world’s leading experts on magnesium and vitamin C. He says that these, along with vitamin D and K, are the most critical supplements.
I could track Dr. Levy down and do a podcast with him, but I do not think it would be better than Mercola’s interview above. I downloaded this from his archives at mercola.libsyn.com. Save this link so you can search for topics that interest you and learn what Dr. Mercola’s famous guests have to say. When you find what you want, use your podcast app such as Downcast to listen offline at faster speeds.
To improve this podcast, I spent several hours splicing the best parts together for you. THIS is the original. HERE, HERE, and HERE are other Mercola magnesium interviews.
Levy is a unique character who tells his origin story in a frank and charming way.
Levy and Mercola agree that magnesium:
Is deficient in more than 90 percent of us.
Is a vasodilating natural calcium channel blocker that brings blood pressure down safely and decreases heart rhythm disturbances. It should be used before blood pressure medications are considered.
We all should be taking oral magnesium, but how much we can use is limited by loose stools. Most people can tolerate one or two 250 to 400 mg tablets a day.
Magnesium is also available cheaply in powder form. Along with a quart or two of water, it is a wonderful cure for constipation.
Dr. Levy reports that most research uses magnesium sulfate, although magnesium chloride may be superior because it suppresses viruses.
There is an older literature about magnesium curing polio.
Magnesium “molecular hydrogen” tablets do not have a laxative effect and may be the best-absorbed form.
Liposome-encapsulated magnesium capsules are well absorbed, so they cause fewer bowel problems. This can lower blood pressure so effectively that patients sometimes become sleepy and tired when they take too much.
Magnesium is one of Mercola’s and Levy’s favorite supplements.
How magnesium is used intravenously:*
For sick people, IV magnesium and IV vitamin C have near-miraculous effects and should be used on hospital admission for nearly every patient.
Dr. Levy said, “Never miss an opportunity if an IV is in to put magnesium in it,” and “Stock your mitochondria up with magnesium.” He also said a study showed that a single high-dose magnesium administration decreased all-cause mortality—even years later (!)
Rapid IV administration works. A gram or two over less than a minute is safe but can occasionally produce low blood pressure, so most doctors give it more slowly.
Intravenous magnesium cures most migraines. Dr. Levy believes these are primarily due to magnesium deficiency.
*The IV formula is 25% magnesium chloride hexahydrate (25 grams in 100 cc distilled water, sterilized). Doses of 10 to 20 cc are given slowly over 10 to 20 minutes once or twice daily. Intramuscular administration is not advised due to the pain of injection. A product from McGuff is commonly used.
“Topical” magnesium is used on the skin surface. When applied twice daily, a “reservoir” of the supplement stays there and slowly releases. Sandy Sanderson has a company in Australia that sells magnesium oil and cream. When I spoke to her and Jamie Turndorf, one of her fans, they emphasized that this vital nutrient also provides good sleep and serenity. Here are a few of Sandy’s other tips:
Get magnesium where you can because every bit counts.
When magnesium deficiency symptoms (like arrhythmias) are experienced, a person can need up to 1,000mg of Mg supplementation daily. After a 400mg oral dose, most is expelled by the digestive system because the gut cannot handle the absorption of such a high concentration in one hit, and diarrhea ensues.
If you prefer the oral route, use magnesium drinking water with about 80mg of magnesium per liter of filtered water. This mimics natural spring water. If you drink 3 liters over 24 hours, you will get about 240mg. Almost all are potentially absorbed by the gut wall because it is in a low enough concentration to pass through. High concentrations can be used as a laxative if required, but the low amounts in spring water do not have this effect. I have scientific studies about this phenomenon on my website HERE.
Six sprays of my Magnesium Oil Spritz provide 300mg of elemental magnesium for the transdermal route. Each teaspoon of Magnesium Cream delivers 150mg magnesium, and each teaspoon of Magnesium Charge Lotion provides 300mg of magnesium.
The whole body’s skin surface is a reservoir for the body’s magnesium stores. Athletes benefit from storing magnesium in their skin and can use it during exercise.
Oral magnesium salts are a laxative: magnesium oxide, citrate, sulfate, etc. The bowel better tolerates magnesium combined with amino acids like magnesium glycinate or magnesium taurate.
Liposomal magnesium is encased in a fatty package. It works well for vitamin C, and magnesium may be better absorbed because the lipids assist absorption across the gut wall.
HERE is one of my articles about magnesium and heart health and a dosage guide.
Sandy’s topical magnesium is available on her website HERE or on Amazon. She is my good “mate,” as they say “down under.” If you want to hear my interview with her, see my archives from last year.
I have a friend who occasionally gets an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation. It makes her feel terrible. She learned that oral magnesium could help, but she had diarrhea when taking more than 800 mg daily. After discovering magnesium oil, her heart has been regular as a clock. She had another lesson when a doctor casually prescribed Prilosec for dyspepsia. “Proton pump inhibitors” like this deplete magnesium, and she had repeated a-fib until she figured this out. She tells me she will never again take a prescription unless there is a compelling reason, and she has done several hours of reading about it.
Dr. Levy adds the following in his book:
[Magnesium is critical for} RNA synthesis, as well as for the synthesis of fatty acids and the conversion of vitamin D into its active hormone form in the body.3 Magnesium also plays a critical role in the production of glutathione, the most essential and most concentrated antioxidant inside the body’s cells.4-7 Inside the cell, magnesium keeps sodium and calcium levels lower and potassium levels higher.8 Arguably, no single molecule is more critical for sustaining life and promoting health than magnesium. For example, few molecules are as critical as vitamin C. However, high doses of other antioxidants can partially compensate for an advanced vitamin C deficiency. However, there are NO, even partly compensatory, substitutes when magnesium is deficient. Only magnesium can alleviate the impact of a magnesium deficiency.Magnesium deficiency [causes] following: ✓Cardiovascular diseases (coronary and peripheral atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmias and QTc prolongation, hypertension, congestive heart failure; stroke) ✓Metabolic syndrome ✓Diabetes ✓Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia ✓Kidney disease ✓Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis ✓COPD and asthma ✓Calcium-containing stone formation anywhere in the body ✓Preeclampsia and eclampsia ✓Migraines and seizure disorders ✓Depression and anxiety ✓Dementias, neurodegenerative diseases, and seizure disorders ✓Hearing loss

Jim Arnold (Liar’s World Substack) sent me this. MOM contains 415mg Magnesium Hydroxide per 5ml. It also has sodium hydrogen carbonate, glycerol, oil of peppermint, sodium saccharin, and water. Unfortunately, “Laboratory studies have also linked saccharin at high doses with the development of bladder cancer in rats, and in 1981 saccharin was listed in the U.S. National Toxicology Program’s Report on Carcinogens as a substance reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”
Although saccharin was banned in 1981, it was “unbanned” as of 2010. The U.S. National Toxicology Program, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization, and the E.U. Scientific Committee for Food all agree it is safe.

Iu2019ve been using magnesium bisglycinate capsules and magnesium for years for sleep. I know a doc in Ottawa that had been on 2 puffers for years… tried magnesium for its muscle relaxing (bronchospasm!) properties and has been off puffers ever since. I work with chronic pain sufferers and magnesium and vitamin D are almost always deficient. Thank you for sharing this!
Should say and melatonin!!
Magnesium oil, being a supersaturated solution of magnesium chloride in water, is an excellent topical for muscle spasms. Magnesium chloride is the most bioavailable form of the metal, having a stability factor of 0. I get mine from bulkreefsupply.com because of its high purity and low price.
are you sure it’s OK to eat stuff made for aquariums
Marine aquariums are far more sensitive to pH changes than normal ones.
Impurities will kill expensive salt-water life forms that wouldn’t bother fresh water ones.
The magnesium chloride sold by Bulk Reef Supply is USP.
Ok well if I die I’ll tell my wife where you live
The closest you could come is the license plate on the van that I live in, sometimes down by a river.
LOVE your sense of humor
Thatu2019s a great suggestion. Whatu2019s the ratio of Mag to water for your solution to make mag oil? Am I understanding correctly what youu2019re saying? Thanks!
Since the magnesium chloride used is dry granules, I put it into a bottle and keep adding water and Mag until no more of it will stay dissolved. The liquid is a supersaturated solution of Mag in water, which is colloquially called magnesium oil because it is slippery. I pour it into another bottle and use it to make a much diluted solution to taste to swallow my supplements with, providing magnesium supplementation in the process.
Gotcha. I take 3 diff mags per day (capsules). But the mag oil sprays were too pricey to keep up. Glad to know this is all it takes to make some. Thanks so much again!!
Magnesium chloride has a stability factor of zero, meaning that its magnesium and chlorine ions separate in water to a greater degree than any other compound of magnesium, facilitating the stomach’s proton pumps’ acquisition of chlorine and the GI tract’s ability to form whatever bond with the free magnesium ions that might behoove it.

explain your comment more please
It was a statement of known and easily provable fact.
I’d be happy to restate it for you if you give me a template.
DIY magnesium ‘oil’ : years ago I found this recipe. 100mg of magnesium chloride flakes to 100ml of non-tap water. Transdermally, if this is too strong and makes your skin itch, then add more water.
Love it
We will try this.

I’ve been taking the cal mag for years for leg muscle spasms and sleep. If I forget for 1 day, do I ever know it. Things are more complicated now with aging and healthcare so shoddy and holistic so hard to find. Anyhow, the soil is actually short on magnesium too and if your tomatoes are not doing well they probably need some magnesium. I’ll try the topical. Thanks for all the input!
topical really helps for a fib
I was just at a farmers market this morning and several vendors were selling homemade blends magnesium-lavender sprays. They said it was good for arthritis, sleep, pain and many other maladies. Anyone heard of that combo?
Hyland’s Leg Cramp homeopathic is great as well. I take 2 at bedtime and keep them in the night stand. If I take them before sleep, I rarely need anything else.
Iu2019ve been using these for years myself, work great!
Yes! I do the same. Iu2019m really liking the u201CP.M.u201D version.
I’ll try it
Yes – I just tried that one – works very well!
Add Quinine Bark. Helps with the leg muscle issue. MI soil lacks Selenium and animals get a form of Polio, that is not the same as humans, it is more Nuerlogical. Citric Acid is also good for your tomatoes.
Quinine is great. I used to take a gel tablet called Q-Vel with quinine – stopped any kind on muscle cramp, but they took it off the market for some reason – said it was dangerous if you took too much!
Yea, my late husband with heart transplant frequently got painful calve cramps and that really helped. If I recall correctly it was taken off the market because of risks to hearts. His Dr wouldnu2019t prescribe it anymore.

Magnesium Citrate is one of the key bone rebuilders, at half what your Calcium Citrate is, same for Strontium Citrate, glutamate works as well, stay away from Oxide if you don’t want a lot of RR trips. Yet not one dr tells an OP patient that. Hub’s Cardio actually suggested he take Magnesium, but failed to tell him to avoid the Oxide type. And that is all you find on store shelves. You have to go online to find the right type and strength.
K complex is great for keeping arteries clean, instead of a med. My D runs low, on my blood work so I’m upping my dosage. C is problematic as it runs up my BS. 500 mg is the best I can do. High doses of multi-strain Probiotics cover the gut, where 80% of your immune system is. Don’t fall for those low-dose junk like Bone Maker, or the one for eyes, they are too low to be of use, buy them as stand-alones. A and Lutein.
Could you explain in more detail about the strontium citrate? Is it helpful for bone density and at what dose? Thank you.
Bone Density is what it works on. There are no really good articles on the net. I’ve read several books on natural cures for OP. But ended up researching what makes babies’ bones grow, strontium was one of the most mentioned after Mag Citrate or Glutinate. I had full OP, but now back to Osteopina, except hips and 1 spot in my back. They only do bone density every 3 yrs. And I’m not sure if there is a age out, like there is for the dreaded colon screens. I never had polyps, so it was every 10 yrs. That will put me over the age for them. They don’t consider Diverticulosis an issue until you have a Diverticulitis attack. Then it’s just a CT and parasitic antibiotics. They gave me Flagyl, It didn’t like my vision.
See above commebt
Word search Butchered by Heakthcare for strontium
I have never heard of vitamin C elevating glucose, but biotin does, and should be discontinued at least 72 hours prior to any blood work
What do you mean by “C is problematic as it runs up my BS” ? Thanks.
For me it’s like drinking orange juice, I’m a Type 2 diabetic from Gastroparesis, Slow digestion. Nasty GI condition.
Ok.
You can take nearly any amount of C except if you take too much you get diarrhea
Thanks. 🙂
Thanks for this! Such a great episode and reaffirms what I thought and knew about the importance of Magnesium.. and I learned quite a few more pearls! Iu2019ve been on Mag Glycinate for years for migraines and while itu2019s not a cure- itu2019s very helpful ! Going to share the podcast ! Would be sn AWESOME guest!
I take a magnesium supplement every day. How much is needed?
As much as you can tolerate. Your bowel will talk to you.
Not if you avoid the OXIDE type.
i am a fan of dr Levy since he wrote and made it free to download Rapid Virus Recovery at the beginning of the plandemic!
Read his book on magnesium and chuckle whenever Death by Calcium, the title of another book of his crosses my mind

Don’t sell yourself short. You would make this much easier to understand. You know when to probe to provide further information for lay audiences. I will need to read your notes to truly understand what they are discussing.
I just re-listened to an earlier podcast with your friend whou2019s with the Epoch Times. It was even better the second time. And, as I mentioned, you drill down on possible unfamiliar areas for your lay listeners like me
I have never taken so many supplements in my life as I have since Covid. My list includes D3 with K, Mag, C, B complex, Turmeric, NAC, Lutein, Melatonin, Zinc and Quercitin. Iu2019ve had Covid twice. Then suddenly I have gotten pretty sick 3 times in the last 3 months and cannot figure out why. I eat low carb, exercise daily, weight is good. Iu2019m not vaxxed, but prior to each illness I have been in fairly close contact with vaxxed people at events. In which case apparently this regimen of supplements has not kept my immune system up to par. Itu2019s hugely disappointing and so Iu2019ve been asking myself – why keep raking all these expensive supplements? What good are they really doing?
Learn as much as you can. Yes it gets ridiculous
You should be taking Ivermectin. I am 71, immune compromised, and I have not had COVID but been exposed many times. I have been taking Ivermectin, prescribed by my functional doctor, for 2 1/2 years. Dr. Pierre Kory told me that Ivermectin was the reason I have not gotten the virus
Me too
Maybe you need something else for your immune system as well. Maybe more protein, because the amino acids proteins are made of are essential for your immune system? Or you could to supplementing with amino acids. Lysine is very helpful in case of virus infections. Not expensive eitheruD83DuDE0AuD83DuDC4D

But now I’m starting to regard her work as credible.
Well, I got back to work after a long period of time. Everyone was vaccinated at least once except me. Only one week after, I had important bleedings after 15 years being menopause without any problems whatsoever. Curiously, they have stopped immediately when I had to quit this job.
Donu2019t you know that at least 25,000 American women have been experiencing abnormal periods or post-menopausal bleeding after seeing friends, living or working with vaccinated people? Research this with Yandex.com for Google just censors these subjects and so many others nowadays.
So, by experience and otheru2019s, I do believe in shedding, although I canu2019t explain its mechanisms.

In the small town I live many I know have had almost miraculous effects with magnesium. Smokers who Iu2019ve always known to have terrible smokers cough cured their terrible hacking with a special blend magnesium tablet especially for the lungs. It was called something like lung zone. It was the talk of the town for a while.
I am in my 40s, heading into perimenopause (I think), and have been taking one 1000mg capsule of Calcium each night with my magnesium carbonate powder and magnesium glycinate. I thought it was helping me calm down and sleep. Should I stop taking the calcium altogether? Do I not need any supplemental calcium?
The latest dogma (and I’m no expert) is that calcium should almost never be taken and actually is harmful
Over 25 years ago, after having had migraines for years and taking the latest pharma drugs, my husband found an article that said they administer IV Mag in the ER for severe migraines. So I started taking OTC magnesium on the chance it would help. Probably a 90% reduction. The remainder? Undiagnosed autoimmune thyroid. So I was happy to hear the Doctor confirm this, because most doctors wonu2019t tell you about a $5 OTC supplement when a big pharma prescription can be written and money made.
